Recognizing the need for a well-trained workforce in the construction industry, the Construction Industry Education
Foundation (CIEF) sponsors an annual Design Build Competition. The event, founded in 1986, is designed to promote career awareness and create a fun learning experience for high school students. Following defined criteria provided by CIEF, each team completes the challenge of designing and preparing construction documents for their structure. Schools compete in one of two categories: the Shed Competition or the Open Competition. Construction of the structure takes place at the competition site over a two-day period. A panel of local architectural and
construction professionals serve as judges. Structures are judged on the students’ ability to perform all the functions of the project including planning and design, scheduling, overall project management, craftsmanship, teamwork and safety.
ASA was proud to support the program’s first year in Houston March 27-28, 2024 where $5,000 was given away to students in scholarships and over $4,000 in tools/equipment was awarded to schools! Our own Tamara Hancock and member Jeff Broadway (American Fire Systems) represent ASA on the CIEF Houston Chapter Board.
Ten schools competed in the Houston competition this year and several ASA members and GC partners supported through material donations, sponsorships, and volunteering.
